Reviews for You Never See Fat Vampires (Paperback) My 13 yr old daughter and I both read this book and loved it. With the current vampire craze it was very up to date, entertaining and even a little scary in parts. Being the mother of an overweight teen I saw a lot of my own daughter in the main character Esme. A great lesson in finding the strength within yourself to accomplish any goal, the importance of accepting yourself and others for who we are on the inside not the outside and in realizing that friends and family can help you overcome anything. I would certainly recommend this book to friends and family.
Reviews for You Never See Fat Vampires (Kindle Edition) The author, a former teacher devoted to helping students learn in a fun way, has carried on his legacy with this imaginative, lighthearted story that does have a serious message as well.
It tells the story of Esmeralda (Esme for short), who wants so much to be thin that she is willing to forsake her principles...at least for a while. Yes, it's the old sell-your-soul theme but with some newfangled touches, including the currently popular vampire phase.
The extreme Weight Watchers-type meetings "on steroids" are a hoot! And the story is written tongue-in-cheek, or should we say, fang-in-cheek, with slightly satirical humor.
I like also that the story sensitively touches on the pain of living in a single-parent household and includes the angst of being a plump preteen in today's thin-oriented society.
The climactic scene is almost too gruesome to bear, with cringe-inducing scenes of horror.....yet one is driven to keep reading. Warning: parts are gross and a bit gory, perhaps too much so for sensitive souls.
But it's a must-read for all young girls who may be struggling to find their own identity amidst the confusion of society's vampires. Like some perverse Twilight Zone episode, this haunting tale has its own version of a "happy ending." Sort of.
Reviews for You Never See Fat Vampires (Paperback) Some kids will risk almost anything to be thin, popular and stop others from teasing them. But would you join the ghoulish Dr. Ghoulash's Midnight Club? I wrote this book because I've always loved vampire stories and wanted to give kids an entertaining adventure that also teaches about friendship and intolerance. Esme is bullied to the point where she is willing to do almost anything to stop it and Dr. Ghoulash and Esme's fiendish foes appear the perfect answer to her problems. I hope kids really enjoy YOU NEVER SEE FAT VAMPIRES while they learn about the terrible impact of bullying.
